About the site

An Elysium at cell scale

A perfect refuge sounds pleasant. The cells inside it give the idea something more specific to do.

Elysian Med Aesthetics

Elysian Med Aesthetics is an editorial website where I think through published research about cellular quality and activity. The words Med Aesthetics name this site; they confer no clinical qualification on its writer. This is not a medical business: there are no prescriptions, sales, shipments or appointments here. These essays offer no medical advice.

Elysian suggests an ideal place to rest. The mouse-oocyte quality finding shrank the imagined occupant from a person to an egg cell in culture. I like the particularity of that setting more than a fantasy in which time simply stops.

The particular cellular task

The experiments that persuade me to spend longer with a paper have a task I can name: egg-cell quality after ovulation, or melatonin synthesis in rat pineal-cell culture. Their particularity earns my enthusiasm; a leap to human rejuvenation spends it carelessly.

A finding can also disturb an attractive idea. The telomere result in breast-cancer cell lines complicates any simple enthusiasm for cellular persistence. The more closely the subject is specified, the more interesting the argument becomes.

Aesthetics suggests an image of an ideal. The image I prefer here has become very small: an egg cell facing an experimental difficulty, rather than an ageless person outside ordinary life. Its modest size gives the ambition an intimacy I enjoy.

Where the collection ends

A culture dish cannot decide a person's treatment. A research essay cannot assess symptoms or weigh an individual's medical history. Those decisions require qualified medical care.

This collection ends with the experiments and the questions they have earned. The reading list gathers the papers; the corrections page explains the current contact arrangements.
